About this series
Rupert Rabbit's Comic ran for 35 issues (1940–present).
Publishing format: Was Ongoing Series.
In Panel by Panel, John Ryan reports that this series began in January 1947. This is not entirely consistent with other evidence and the first issue was probably a month earlier.
The Sydney Tribune reported on 31 January 1948 that this series had folded 'because of newsprint and dollar restrictions'. ['Four All-Aust Comics Fold Up: Syndicated Yank Rivals Flourish', Tribune (Sydney: 1939), 31 January 1948, p. 7, viewed 22 Apr 2019, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article208108156]. However, the series continued until at least mid-year. On 17 July 1948, the Tribune again referenced it as one of the 'Australian comics, which generally have a higher quality and a healthier tone than their foreign competitors…' ['Flood of Yankee Comics (1,650,000 Copies a Month) Sweeps on Unchecked', Tribune (Sydney: 1939), 17 July 1948, p. 7, viewed 22 Apr 2019, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article208111038].
A 1947 newspaper column noted 'We agreed that Rupert Rabbit, a Sydney publication, had some merit. Contributions of all, kinds from the children are encouraged, penfriends arranged, and children's letters acknowledged. The comic strips, however, are of a horribly low standard.' ['A Woman Says', The Workers Star (Perth, WA: 1936), 10 October 1947, p. 4, viewed 22 Apr 2019, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article240644848].
