About this series

Atomic Bomb ran for 1 issues (1946–present). Publishing format: one-shot. Atomic Bomb #1 (Jay Burtis, Cedar Grove, N.J., 1945-46) is a one-shot publication and the only issue of this series. The comic lacks an indicia — the sole publisher identification appearing in the issue is the imprint "Published by Jay Burtis, Cedar Grove, N.J." printed at the bottom of an interior advertisement page. In the absence of an indicia, the cover logo reading "Atomic Bomb" represents the strongest available primary evidence for the series title. This is further supported by all major professional references including Heritage Auctions, the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide, and the CGC census, all of which catalog this book consistently as Atomic Bomb #1. The cover is of particular visual and historical interest. It depicts the superhero Captain Wizard swooping horizontally over a nocturnal urban rooftop, cape billowing dramatically, while suited figures engaged in a criminal confrontation play out below — a composition strikingly reminiscent of the cover of Detective Comics #27 (DC, May 1939), which introduced Batman and effectively established the visual grammar of the superhero rooftop cover for the entire Golden Age. Whether consciously or unconsciously invoked, the Atomic Bomb cover demonstrates how thoroughly that compositional template had permeated the visual language of comic book publishing by the mid-1940s, even among small independent one-shot publishers operating on limited resources.
